There is a significant move to remove much of the burden associated with an inspection. The organisation wants to decrease unnecessary workload for anyone that encounters an inspection. A key role that Ofsted plays is the publishing of the reports that they carry out.

These are public documents and have the capacity to make or break a school system. If a school continually fails then the head teacher is at risk of being dismissed. Many of these dismissals are seen as unlawful and school governors have the power to sack senior leaders at very short notice.

The role of Ofsted is to promote excellent care and education in England. Reporting directly to the government, Ofsted pride themselves on being impartial and independent. The organisation also have the power to regulate any children and young people's service. Having a large workforce across eight different regions, the services Ofsted provide are extensive. They have an estimated inspectors and around employees. Many of these inspectors are head teachers of outstanding schools. The agency was firmly established as an organisation that improves the quality of education across England. Over the years, the organisation has seen many leadership changes but its primary function has remained the same.

Many of the leadership team have gone on to gain peerages from the Queen such as Sir Michael Wilshaw. This year we have seen significant changes with the Ofsted inspection framework. These changes come into play for the academic year. It is worth school leaders taking a moment to fully understand the potential implications. We cannot take all of the guesswork out of the changes but we can shed light on certain areas. Although the Act explicitly stated that Local Education Authorities were entitled to carry out their own inspections of schools under their control, LEAs themselves have been subject to inspection by Ofsted and the Audit Commission since During its early years, Ofsted was particularly controversial.

At least some of the difficulty for many years was attributed by many to the personal style of the confrontational Chief Inspector, Chris Woodhead, who ran the Office in its early years from until Mr Woodhead resigned in , claiming that he could not accept some of the educational policies of the Labour Government which had reappointed him in The inspection regime was amended in to reduce the burden on schools posed by inspections and to improve their efficacy.

From September that year schools had just two days notice of an inspection, compared to six to ten weeks previously, and were required to keep their own self-assessment reports which Ofsted could refer to. The aim was to reduce regulation on good schools while taking tougher action on those that were underperforming. A similar regime was introduced in early years services in April , although self-assessment was not a requirement, and in teacher training providers in September It was extended to the independent school sector in January , and planned for further education colleges later that year.
