Who is a features editor at the herald scotland

This might of course be an isolated example. If I spend the hefty cover price of a title such as The Herald, I want to be informed through analysis and expert writing; however, the regional titles — for one reason or another — have been steadily losing their key, experienced staff who can do this. Papers have to offer something different in an age of digital competition, and quality leaders certainly come into that category. Anyway, this is just the start.

On Page 33! PS And I sympathise with paperboy… The last thing the editor of my last paper wanted in the leader column was an actual opinion — for fear of offending someone who disagreed. Reporters also took turns to write three or four opinion pieces for a page once a week… but they were often rejected for being too opinionted.

Laughable but true! I disagree. I have been gnashing my teeth, at least, over the antics of politicians re Brexit and their defiance of the majority of people who want this country to leave the EU. Same with council stories. Boring, boring, say some editors. Until their council tax bill comes thru their letterbox then they want to know why stories have not been done about the hike in council tax etc. I recognise what you say!

On my old paper all they wanted was some old flannel to fill a box of pre-determined size and basically say everything was wonderful in the world. Such a pointless exercise that I could never imagine how anyone with an ounce of journalistic integrity would demand it.

Staff describe a toxic environment across its Scottish titles, where they feel overstretched, undervalued and disrespected. Newsquest staff were also perplexed by the fly-on-the-wall documentary The Papers , shown on BBC Scotland in September, which caught the editor Donald Martin suggesting specialist reporters were poor value for money and starkly revealed the absence of senior women in the organisation.

Comparisons are made with the first years of the Scottish parliament, when a far healthier press held newly elected representatives to account, for example prompting the resignation of the second first minister, Henry McLeish, over an expenses scandal.

There are also limits to fitting papers with a national market into a regional news template, as is likely to occur with the Scotsman if Montgomery is successful in his bid for JPI Media. Newquest no longer publishes audited circulation figures for its titles, but the Herald had fallen to 22, a day by the end of December , while the Scotsman sells 14, copies a day. Clegg, who recently moved on from his role as political editor of the Daily Record to edit the Courier, published by DC Thomson, adds that while papers such as the Herald and the Scotsman still have some local brand loyalty, the significance of geography is much diminished by the shift to consuming news online.

This article is more than 1 year old. The Scotsman is up for sale and it is feared more job cuts could be on the way if the sole remaining bidder is successful.

They once dominated discourse but the Herald and Scotsman now struggle to hold power to account.
