What is the difference between a shopsmith 500 and 510

I purchased my Shopsmith in to supplement a 10" Craftsman table saw. When I purchased the Shopsmith, the Model was new, released in It offered a larger main table, extension wings with legs, a geared "rack and pinon" mechanism for raising and lowering the table, an improved fence, and a "second" quill bearing to reduce load on the quill.

However, I quickly out grew the capacities and design flaws of the Shopsmith. Today, I use it as disk and belt sanding center. Occasionly, I use its drill press function and lathe.

The Shopsmith is definitely one of my disappointments as far as woodworking tools go. However, I like having it around for what it does well.

General Notes Good and Bad Power. The Shopsmith is underpowered. It has a very small, non-industrial, 1 HP motor. Shopsmith claims it develops 2 HP. Yes it will, but only at the point of burning up. If the motor drew enough current to develop 2 HP, it would quickly disintegrate. It runs on VAC and only draws amps.

You can run this tool, anywhere. I have a friend who made furniture in a single bedroom of his two bedroom apartment using just a Shopsmith.

Varible Speed. The variable speed is nice. No other table saw has it. Variable Speed. Everytime you power off the machine, you have to turn the speed dial to slow.

Powering on the Shopsmith in any other speed position is not recommended and can lead to premature failure of the unit. This is a pain! A number of Shopsmith owners have emailed me indicating that I am mistaken in this regard..

Necessary or not, the caution label glued onto the headstock indicates that you must turn the speed dial to slow before turning off the machine. It is a sure way to mess up your speeds, therefore requiring a high speed calibration, as well as your belts and pulley's.

It is nice to have "five" machines that fit into the space of a bicycle. It is definitely a "neat" machine for those of you who like machinery in spite of its flaws. Tool changes can be a real pain as described below.

Almost every woodworking process is easier on conventional machines. The accessories do not disappear when not in use. You have to plan and provide shop space to house the bandsaw, belt sander, etc. Tons of accessories, some well designed others are not. The new Universal Lathe Tool Rest is incredible. The lathe-duplicator is reportedly a well designed accessory. The scroll saw is not. I have the belt sander and think it's great. Their web site has lots of projects, tips, etc.

Their documentation is very well done. Everything leans towards fun. You have to perform periodic preventive maintenance if you want to keep the Shopsmith running smoothly. Occasionaly, you need to pull the headstock cover, oil up the VS Shaft, etc.

Not a big deal, but Because of its light weight and excellent casters, you can easily move the Shopsmith around and lock it into place. I have heard of Shopsmith owners transporting the unit to a work site.

May not be practical, but certainly is possible. These are precision, close-fit parts that require oiling for smooth movement of sliding sheaves. The Shopsmith Mark 5 number designation was originally produced by Magna Engineering, which also produced several other equipment lines.

More than 2 million are reported to be in use, so parts are often available from other used ones that are being stripped for parts. Being the finicky sort I check alignment before starting a new project. My Shopsmith is now about a year old, and my only problem has been that the nut holding the guide rail nomenclature? If you have an answer to this question.

Thank you! I have a Shopsmith good working order except for the motor. It seems to have a loss of power, gets up to speed ok but with any kind of drag at all it slows or stops. Much obliged. Go to your public library and get the book on Electric motors. This book will show you everything you need to know. The average motor lasts 20yrs,and there are a few small things that go bad on em,,Make sure that motor is actually at fault and not something possibly jammed that its hooked up to..

Start capacitors can be bought at Appliance Parts suppliers store in yellow pages I'm not sure when the last time it was used before I got it home late last year. Anyhow, I've been using the bandsaw attachment a lot, and I'm having difficulties with it. To begin with, if I crank it up to the right tension and run the saw without feeding it stock , the blade works itself forward and will come off the wheels if I'm not careful.

I just replaced both tires partly because one of them broke in hopes that it would fix the problem, but no luck. If I set it to a lower tension, the problem goes away. So: is there an easy fix to this tracking problem? Or do I have to ship it to Dayton?

Is it a bad idea to operate the saw with a lower tension? I'm also having problems aligning the cooling blocks; it seems that the arm has enough side to side and forward-back give that each time the arm changes height, the blocks need to be tweaked.

Is there a fix for this? And one final question. I saw a reasonably priced bandsaw in the recent AMT catalog. Am I having these problems because I have an old and poorly cared for [Shopsmith] saw? Or are these problems "just part of the territory" of bandsaw ownership? When a bandsaw tries to spit out the blade you've fed it, it is often a tracking problem. In a nut shell, this means that the center lines for the two wheels are not parallel.

Every band saw that I have ever seen has an adjustment screw or knob for setting tracking. If this does not work, there are several, though less common fixes. I suggest you consult FWW articles or one of several books written by Mark Duginske which address tuning a band saw. As for your other question, using a band saw with too little blade tension will make it difficult to cut along an intentional line. It will also make it difficult, if not impossible, to have your cut straight and square to the board's face.

My SS jointer is in need of new blades. After reading the SS docs, they have designed their blades with a slight bevel to them so when the wedge is put in place the blade and wedge "lock". This is a safety feature so if the wedge becomes loose the blade won't come flying out! I'm all for safety I just want to know if anyone has used other non SS blades, and any recommendations you may have. I'd like to put another twist on this question - does anyone know if carbide cutters are available for a Shopsmith jointer?
